Set up online payments

Connect Stripe under Settings > Integrations > Stripe Payments. Every invoice page then shows a Pay with Card button to your clients. Choose how much of the processing fee to pass on in Payment Settings, and enable tips in Financial Settings.

Online payment is the difference between "I'll mail a check" and paid-before-you-leave-the-driveway. One connection, and every invoice you send becomes payable by card.

Connect Stripe

Online payments run on Stripe. Connect your Stripe account under Settings > Integrations > Stripe Payments; once the status shows Connected, you are live. There is no per-invoice switch: every invoice's page shows a Pay with Card button to your client from that moment on.

Decide who pays the processing fee

Once connected, a Payment Settings card appears on the same page:

  • Pass processing fees to customer: when on, a processing fee is added at checkout, your client pays it, and you receive the full invoice amount. It is on by default.
  • Fee percentage to pass: a slider for how much to pass on. The maximum is 2.4% for Canadian companies and 4% for US companies.

The fee is shown to your client as its own line before they confirm, so there are no surprises on either side.

Turn on tips

In Settings > Financial Settings, the Tips section has a toggle: Allow customers to add a tip when paying invoices. You choose up to five percentage options (the defaults are 5, 10, and 15). When paying, your client sees the tip step with your options, plus None and Other for a custom amount.

Note

Tips can only be added when paying the full balance, not on deposit payments.

What your client experiences

They open the invoice link and click Pay with Card. US companies' clients may first choose card or Pay by Bank (ACH, 3 to 5 business days). Then the tip step if enabled, a confirmation showing balance, tip, and processing fee, and a secure Stripe checkout. Afterward they land on a payment confirmation and get an emailed receipt.

If the invoice requires a deposit, the page offers Pay deposit and Pay full balance instead.

Where the payment lands

Nowhere you have to put it: the payment records itself. The invoice flips to Paid (or shows partially paid when a balance remains), any tip and passed-on fee appear as their own line items, and the payment shows in your Payments list with a client-facing receipt. If you also take cards in person, set up Tap to Pay on mobile; it uses the same fees and settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Only when a deposit is set. The payment page offers the full balance, or the deposit amount when one is due. Free-form partial amounts are not offered online; record those manually.
US companies also get a Pay by Bank option (ACH), which takes 3 to 5 business days and carries a smaller fee capped at 5 dollars.
No. Untick Pass processing fees to customer and you absorb the fee. The slider also lets you pass on only part of it.
